Guest Editorial: In Appreciation

By Councilwoman Betty Janik

As we begin the Holiday Season, I want to offer thanks for your support for Proposition 490.  It will provide a dedicated source of funding for Scottsdale Open Space, a most valuable asset that is enjoyed by both residents and visitors. We will be able to maintain our Parks and Preserve for the next 30 years as is befitting a world class community. Thank you for the overwhelming support for Proposition 491.  It allows the City to carry on business as usual without interruption of basic services.

Thank you for supporting Maryann McAllen.  She will join Council and be a voice of reason. I am concerned about the shift in the balance of power on Council.  However, you, the voters, have spoken loud and clear.  I wish all the new members, Lisa Borowsky, Jan Dubauskas, Adam Kwasman, and Maryann McAllen, great success in guiding the future direction of Scottsdale.

I am most thankful for:

1.      All those who voted in the election.  Our way of life depends on it.

2.      Our Scottsdale community that makes Scottsdale a wonderful place to live, work, and play. You volunteer countless hours on boards and commissions, at senior centers, as participants in neighborhood watch and road cleanups, as ambassadors for our City, offering a helping hand to neighbors and those in need, at food banks and  libraries, with youth activities, in the Preserve, and the list goes on.

3.      Our dedicated staff and workforce.  You keep the city humming and make it look easy, even though you encounter numerous challenges each day.

4.      The McDowell Sonoran Preserve which will now continue to flourish with the passage of Prop 420 in 2018 and Prop 490 in 2024.

5.      The thriving City I call home – safe, clean, and engaging,

6.      My family for their support and encouragement during a very demanding 4 years on Council, even enduring taunting from residents for my votes while on Council.

I wish you and those you hold dear, a peaceful Thanksgiving and Happy Holiday Season.

Signing off,

Betty Janik, Scottsdale
