Ending Mental Health Education Is Misguided

By Betty Janik

HB 2093 is winding its way through the Arizona House.  Sponsored by Rep Lisa Fink with strong support from Rep Matt Gress, it aims to repeal a five years old law that requires mental health education to be included in health education classes in Arizona schools.

Physical and mental health are inextricably related for overall well-being.  While physical health generally refers to ability of the body to function at peak levels, mental health refers to a state of emotional, psychological, and social well-being.  Regular exercise, healthy eating, and stress management impact both aspects of well-being.   By studying overall well-being in health classes, schools enhance the ability of students to function in modern society.

Mental health modules present safety suggestions such as wearing a helmet when engaged in risky sports, explaining the link between mental health and a hard impact to the head, describing techniques for self-regulating emotions (i.e. self-control), managing stressful situations, and offering tips on how to recognize and seek assistance for depression and anxiety.  While parents are usually the source of support, many parents simply do not know how to handle these situations.  Teachers have training in mental health and can offer a helping hand. Working together, parents and teachers can help unwind the mysteries of the teenage brain and offer tools for success. Students I have spoken to report that the sessions are informative and well received.

In 2021, Republicans in the House and Senate voted overwhelmingly to pass legislation requiring mental health education in schools following the COVID epidemic.   It is needed as much today as it was five years ago.  Suicide is the second leading cause of death among teens and young adults.  Education is key to fostering their well-being.

Please contact AZ Representatives at https://www.azleg.gov/emailazleg/ and urge them to reject HB 2093.
