Guest Editorial: Scottsdale’s Foundation and its Future, 75 years and beyond

Recently I attended a reception for the book, “Hands-on History , Residents Reflect on Scottsdale’s 75 Years”.  It was filled with the Who’s Who of Scottsdale. Former Mayors, local business leaders, and civic volunteers, all of whom had a hand in shaping our beautiful city. The guests included many of the 75 writers who shared their personal stories about their own Scottsdale history.

Looking around the Civic Center Library, where I had studied as a child, I was struck by the remarkable range of people who shared my love for Scottsdale. Our collective experiences have helped shape and strengthen this community. At my table were the superintendent of Scottsdale schools, the president of the Historical Society, and a former City Department Director. Although all from different backgrounds, we were united by a commitment to public service.

Authors and attendees exchanged hugs, tears, and heartfelt respect. Their stories revived memories, inspired smiles, and offered newer residents—those with fewer than my six decades in Scottsdale—a chance to learn about the city’s history. The reception also provided an opportunity to meet local heroes, including Carla, known as the mother of “The Preserve”; Jim Bruner, who helped create the TPC; and Joan Fudala, Scottsdale’s historian.

As I read about Scottsdale’s history, I thought about the future of our city and what that will be. Most importantly who will lead us into the future while protecting what has been built.

Scottsdale deserves visionary leadership grounded in service to the community rather than personal ambition. It needs someone who pursues meaningful results instead of headlines and leads with steadfast principles. Raoul Zubia is that leader.
