Letter to the Editor- Questioning Civility

To the Editor,

I am writing to express my deep concerns regarding Raoul Zubia’s candidacy for the Scottsdale City Council. While his campaign materials claim a desire to return to “commonsense” and restore civility, his actual conduct on the campaign trail reveals a glaring double standard that is anything but unifying.

Mr. Zubia claims he will restore decorum to the council, yet his own campaign relies on name-calling and division. He has actively used street signs to refer to incumbent members as “clowns” and publicly labeled his opponents “cowards” simply for missing a debate due to prior commitments. This duplicitous style of campaigning is deeply divisive and directly contradicts his self-proclaimed mission of bringing civility back to our city’s leadership.

Furthermore, Mr. Zubia’s platform lacks substantive policy positions. Beyond vague campaign talking points about protecting neighborhoods, his campaign fails to offer concrete, detailed plans on how he would actually govern or advocate for Scottsdale residents on the council.

Finally, we must look closely at his assertions that he will work across the aisle with everyone. Despite these claims, his candidacy lacks any demonstrated support from local Republicans; his endorsements and backing stem exclusively from Democrats and socialist factions. A candidate who cannot bridge partisan divides during a campaign cannot be expected to foster true unity once elected.

Scottsdale deserves leaders who offer substance, respect, and a genuine ability to collaborate with all members of the community. Raoul Zubia’s divisive approach and lack of clear policy show his candidacy is not in the best interest of Scottsdale
