Guest Editorial: New COVID Grants Can Help Small Businesses, Arts Groups, Galleries

By Recker McDowell —

Maricopa County is launching a new $23 million program to help small businesses and nonprofits (including arts groups) impacted by COVID-19.

The Small Business Grant Program will start accepting applications for the program on July 9th.  They will be accepted through July 31st.

Grants can total up to $10,000. The funding is coming from the $2 trillion federal CARES Act.

The money is aimed at helping small businesses and groups who have seen big revenue hits because of the pandemic. The Arizona Community Foundation is helping the county administer the new fund.

The grants can be a big help to the arts community in Scottsdale and the rest of the region. The program can help art galleries and other arts related businesses and nonprofits when they need it most.

The drop in tourism has hit Scottsdale’s galleries and other arts related businesses hard. Many nonprofits (including in the performing and visual arts) have had to cancel fundraisers and events. Many have also had to lay off workers.

The county program can help, and we need to see even more assistance as the region and country continues to navigate COVID-19 and its impacts.
