Scottsdale is home to champions, especially on the football field. It has had a surprising amount of NFL-level talent that has been birthed in our neck of the woods, and the story of Devon Dampier is yet another example of our city being a massive talent incubator. Devon Dampier’s remarkable journey from Saguaro High School to Utah’s starting quarterback perfectly embodies the excellence our city is known for producing.

When Dampier stepped under center for the Sabercats in 2021, he didn’t just lead a football team; he delivered Scottsdale a state championship. That magical playoff run, culminating in a 20-15 victory over Chandler for the Open Division title, showcased the kind of grit and determination that defines our community. The fact that he accomplished this after joining the team just six games into the season makes it even more extraordinary.

Dampier’s 2022 Ed Doherty Award as Arizona’s top high school player put him in elite company alongside Perry High’s Brock Purdy, but it was his connection to Scottsdale that shaped his character. His admiration for former Saguaro star Christian Kirk reflects the inspiring legacy of excellence that flows through our schools.

Now, as Utah’s quarterback with Big 12 championship aspirations and College Football Playoff dreams, Dampier carries Scottsdale’s winning spirit to Salt Lake City. His leadership earned him a spot on Utah’s leadership council after just two weeks on campus, typical of the character development our city’s programs instill.

Coach Kyle Whittingham’s praise of Dampier as “a coach on the field” and his impressive +5000 Heisman odds demonstrate that Scottsdale continues producing not just talented athletes, but true leaders.

While our hearts will always bleed maroon and gold for Arizona State, we can’t help but cheer for this Scottsdale success story…at least until October 11th when the Utes visit Tempe. Until then, Devon Dampier represents the best of what Scottsdale develops: champions who carry our city’s excellence wherever they go.
