The Remarkable Revitalization of Southern Scottsdale

By Virginia Korte
As you probably know, my family has deep roots in Southern Scottsdale – for most of 30 years we operated a Chevrolet dealership on the corner of Scottsdale and McDowell Roads.
I have taken a special interest in helping revitalize the area and am proud of the progress being made — including the springing up of new businesses and the sprucing up of older neighborhoods. The restoration of Southern Scottsdale has been remarkable.
It is an ongoing process.  So I want to express my appreciation to those who are investing in improving the area.  Thank you for all that you are doing.
Recently, the first pop-up art gallery on McDowell Road was created by Jeff Berghoff.  Jeff had already done a spectacular job of re-purposing the old Scottsdale Nissan car dealership into his landscaping business, Berghoff Design Group.  Now he has taken what was once the showroom of the former dealership and converted it into a 5,000 square-foot gallery.
There are also important efforts happening in education.
Southern Scottsdale resident Dana Close is working to increase the community’s awareness of how volunteers can help Coronado High School students excel.  In addition, the Scottsdale Firefighters Association is a principal sponsor of Coronado’s Jobs For Arizona’s Graduates program in which 40 students are being taught special skills of how to become workforce-ready.
Several weeks ago, Business United for Scottsdale Schools (BUSS) held its “Business & Education Partnership Breakfast” at SkySong.  BUSS is a new organization committed to building a bond between our business and education communities.
I urge everyone who is contributing to the revitalization of Southern Scottsdale to keep up the good work.  I am proud to be a part of their efforts.
