Guest Editorial: Local Influencer Uses Platform for Awareness

By Gilbert Guru

Holland Smith, an up and coming Instagram Influencer based in Chandler, has recently used her growing following to spread a positive message in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. The recent college graduate was contacted by Arizona Department of Health Sciences (ADHS) to utilize her following to promote its #MaskUpAZ initiative.

Holland Smith, who typically uses her platform to promote healthy eating and recipes, took a break to promote “one of the most critical pieces in stopping the spread of COVID-19.”

The young influencer said that she supported #MaskUpAZ and was honored when she was contacted by the ADHS because she “wants to return to normal, like everybody else, but in order to do that we need to follow the guidelines set for us. I hate wearing a mask as much as the next person, but I want to live my life to fullest again and if wearing a mask allows that to happen then that is what I will do.”

“I have three autoimmune diseases and asthma, that’s why I am so passionate about being cautious when it comes to masking up and taking safety precautions in public. The reason I started my health blogging/coaching is because I am passionate about helping others struggling with the same issues heal their bodies and I want to give healthy tips on how to strengthen their immune system especially with COVID!”

Covid has become a political debate and it is refreshing to have a local figure step aside from the political and promote health. Promote how to stay safe to those who also have an autoimmune disease. Promote how to be safe around people with autoimmune diseases. And, how to be safe in general. It is crucial to recognize that some people are not as equipped to fight off the virus as others, and masks are crucial to stop spread overall and to protect these members of our society. Holland also shared information on proper mask care, such as how to wash it correctly and how to remove it with the least amount of hand to face contact.
