Bueller?

Imprinted on pop culture by a cultish comedic movie, “Bueller?” is a phrase meant to convey waiting for a response when there is none.

And that’s how we feel nearly one week after stating in no uncertain terms how deficient Scottsdale leadership has been to aid decimated tourism-related businesses despite having the means to do so.

Think about it.  Congress, of all institutions, is now working on a FOURTH Coronavirus related bill to help public health and the economy but Scottsdale can’t scrape together even one to help prevent its salient small businesses from suffering further catastrophic losses.

It is government and leadership malfeasance at a time when the opposite is needed.

English teachers often warn you against mixing metaphors and they would probably caution against mixing movie scenes to make a point too.  But we’re going to do it anyways.

Near the end of Top Gun as Ice Man struggles to fight off Russian MiGs, the aircraft carrier’s commander orders Maverick (Tom Cruise) into action and queries others about getting more help to the dogfight.  Someone responds more planes can get there in ten minutes, to which the commander replies: “Bullshit.  This thing is going to be over in 2 minutes.”

So many Scottsdale businesses don’t have ten months, ten days or even ten minutes.

Fortunately, Maverick resolved his fears and indecision in time to save the day.

Unfortunately, for Scottsdale small and tourism-related businesses no Maverick has yet appeared on the horizon.
